Luz Vega was third generation and still working the same valley.


Her grandfather picked cotton off Highway 99. Her mother packed tomatoes at the Del Monte plant on Garces until her knees gave out. Luz drives a forklift at a warehouse in Shafter, forty minutes from the house she grew up in, twenty minutes from her apartment in Bakersfield and the Fresno State diploma she keeps in a box under her bed.

She was standing in line at the taco truck outside the warehouse gate when Debbie Ruiz pulled up behind her. Debbie had graduated from Delano High the same year as Luz. She is a shift supervisor now. She wears the orange vest.


"You putting in for the lead position?" Debbie asked. "They posted it this morning."


"No," Luz said.


"Pay's better. Only a little more but still."


"I know what the pay is, Debbie."


Debbie ordered a quesadilla and paid with her phone. Luz ordered two tacos de asada and paid with the crumpled bills she kept in her back pocket because her card was short.


"You should put in," Debbie said, unwrapping her quesadilla as she walked back toward the warehouse. "You've been here longer than half these people."


Luz watched her go. Debbie wasn't wrong. That was the problem.


Luz had been trying to book her leave for the past week and a half. Marcus played for the LA Galaxy team and had a home game on the fifteenth. She'd met him last April when she took the train down to Los Angeles with her colleague Priya. It was the first time she'd gotten out of Delano in five years. They ended up at a sports bar in Culver City after the match. Marcus was there, asking for the same cheap beer she ordered. That was fourteen months ago. Every time she blocked the dates something came up. Last month it was community service at the Delano Animal Shelter. She'd been going every Saturday since. There was a stray cat there named Mango, a fat orange tabby who liked to sit on her lap.


Her phone rang. Her mother. A Tuesday.


Her mother called on Sundays, after Mass, to report on the neighbors and the price of tomatoes at the Vallarta on Garces Highway. A Tuesday call meant something had gone wrong.


"There's a letter," her mother said. "From Mexico City. They want the papers."


"What papers, Ma?.”


"Your grandfather's contract. The bracero papers. They're asking for documentation. They say there's still a fund. That people who have the original contracts can still make a claim."


Luz looked at the clock on the dashboard. She had eleven minutes before her break ended. "How long have you had this letter."


Her mother was quiet.


"Ma."


"Three weeks."


Luz turned the engine off. "I'll be there on Saturday."


"Okay, mi’ja," her mother said. "Drive careful."

The tin box sat on the Formica table between Luz and her mother. It didn't look like an inheritance. It looked like trash, dented, dusted like Delano in summer.


"Don't touch the papers," her mother said, not looking up from the serranos she was cutting. Her hands moved fast, bare, no gloves, the knife splitting each chile clean down the center without pausing. "Your grandfather said they were heavy. Even then."


Luz ignored her. She was thirty-two, back in the same kitchen she'd left at eighteen, and her card was short. "It's just paper, Ma. If there's a fund, we file the claim. That's it."


"Un coleccionista," her mother uttered to herself.


Luz clicked the rusted latch.


The contract was on top. One page, folded twice, the creases gone soft with age. She opened it flat on the table.

At the top, a seal. United States Department of Labor. Below it, in typed letters:


Mexican Farm Labor Agreement. Agricultural Worker Contract.


Name: Ernesto Vega Morales. Origin: Guanajuato, Mexico. Work Site: Delano, California. Contract Date: June 14, 1944. Wage Rate: Thirty cents (30¢) per hour. Savings Deduction: Ten percent (10%) of gross wages, to be withheld by employer and forwarded to Wells Fargo Bank, San Francisco, for transfer to Banco Agrícola de México, for deposit into Rural Savings Fund established for the contracted worker.


Luz read that paragraph twice.


Below it, one more line, in the flat language of government documents:


The respective agencies of the Government of the United States shall be responsible for the safekeeping of the sums contributed by the Mexican workers toward the formation of their Rural Savings Fund.


She stopped at the word safekeeping.


She touched the page.


The first blister rose from beneath the skin of her palm. A deep, searing heat climbed her wrist, the weight of a short-handled hoe pulling her shoulder down toward the linoleum floor.


"Luz," her mother whispered, finally stopping the knife. "I told you. That debt doesn't belong to the bank anymore. It belongs to us."


Luz didn't pull her hand away.


"Ma, my hand."


Her mother didn't look. She kept cutting, the knife splitting serrano after serrano. Thwack. Thwack. Thwack. "Don't look for what isn't lost. That money is gone. But the work stayed behind."


"It's just a contract." Luz forced her fingers to curl. The skin felt paper-thin, stretched over bones that felt too long, too heavy for her frame. "A bunch of zeros and a signature from a man who's been dead thirty years”.


"Ernesto didn't die with his pockets empty because he was lazy," her mother said, turning. A serrano split open on the board behind her. "He came here in 1944 because the US government sent a recruiter to Guanajuato. To his village. The man had a government seal on his truck and a list of names, and he stood in the plaza and called them out one by one. Your great-grandmother packed Ernesto a bag and he got on a truck to Empalme, Sonora, where they processed him and put him on another truck to Delano. He was nineteen years old. He had never left Guanajuato."


Luz looked at the contract. June 14, 1944. Ernesto Vega Morales. Nineteen years old.


"He worked the fields off Highway 99 for six years," her mother said. "Sugar beets. Tomatoes. Chiles. They gave him el cortito — the short-handled hoe — so the foreman could see from the road that the men were bent low enough. He came back to Guanajuato with a broken back and a receipt from Wells Fargo that said his savings were waiting in Mexico City. He went to the Banco Agrícola with that receipt. They told him there was no account. He went back the next year. They told him to come back with documentation. He went back every year for eleven years. They told him the same thing every time. He stopped going when the bank became Banrural and said they had no records of the program at all."


Outside, a car with a bad muffler turned down Garces Highway.


"How much was it," Luz said.


"The receipt said four hundred and twelve dollars. That's what Wells Fargo sent to Mexico City. That was 1950. Your grandfather died in 1998. Your abuela kept the receipt in this box until she died. Then it came to me."


"And the letter from Mexico City."


"They settled a lawsuit in 2008. Each bracero got thirty-eight thousand pesos. Your grandfather was dead. I didn't qualify. But they opened another claim period. If we have the original contract, we can file for the estate."


"How much is thirty-eight thousand pesos now."


Her mother picked up the knife again. "Not enough."


She gripped the edge of the table with her good hand. "He was a bracero, Ma. Not a slave."


"The difference is a piece of paper, Luz. And you're holding it."


Her mother set the knife down. She wiped her hands on the dish towel. She looked at the tin box and said nothing for a moment.


"He used to send money orders from Fresno every two weeks," she said. "Even after the program ended and the savings never came. Thirty dollars. Fifty when the harvest was good. Your abuela kept them in an envelope behind the Virgin on the kitchen shelf. She kept them until she died. She thought if she had enough paper, enough evidence, someone would have to listen."


Luz looked at the contract on the table. Ernesto Vega Morales. The typed numbers. The Rural Savings Fund. The line about safekeeping that the US government wrote in 1944 and that no one honored for eighty years.


Her palm was burning now, steady and deep.


She did not put the contract down.


Luz looked at the stain spreading across her palm. It wasn't ink. It was dry, gritty earth that smelled like the fields off Highway 99 in August — pesticide and sunbaked dirt.


She didn't go to the sink. She just sat there.


Her mother picked up the knife again.


Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.


The same cadence Luz had heard all her life in the stories about el cortito — the short-handled hoe the foremen made the braceros use so they could see the men were bent low enough, suffering visibly enough. The one that broke Ernesto's back before he was forty. Her mother wasn't looking at the papers. She was looking at the serranos.

Luz thought about the drive back from Fresno State in 2012, her diploma on the backseat, telling herself she was only staying a season. She thought about the warehouse. The card was short. Thirty-eight thousand pesos. Six years in the fields off Highway 99.


She thought about the word safekeeping one more time. Who wrote that word.? What were they doing when they wrote it?. Did they go home that night and eat dinner?.


They did. She knew they did.


"Luz," her mother said, and set the knife down. "The small plates are in the top cupboard. Set the table."


Luz stood. Her hand felt heavy with old dirt, but she reached for the cupboard anyway. She set the small plates down one by one. Carefully. Something worth keeping.
