Winter 2026

Issue Introduction
January is typically a dark time and this year we are in particular need of light, warmth, and hope. Some of the questions many of us are asking include: How will we survive? What do we have to do to get us through these days when there are strong forces out to get us? In this context, two Supreme Court rulings stand out in ironic contrast to each other: the police can stop you because of your skin color, but a college can’t give you special consideration because you are darker than others.
Latinx authors have a special challenge in this environment, needing to both document our status and provide a way to keep us from falling into frightened paralysis. This issue’s stories demonstrate how our storytellers are responding to the current crisis. Collectively, they show us that we have dignity and humanity that bigotry can’t deny. We are grounded in our time and place, and no one can displace us. This issue’s stories also demonstrate that we are powerful and that while we might not win every fight, we can resist. We can keep on going. And, I am happy to point out, our authors can do this with stories that are interesting and entertaining to read. Enjoy!
